Potpourri-in-a-Jar

This is an easy DIY project that makes a great gift. You can be as creative as you’d like with your selection of herbs and spices. It can be just a few ingredients, or a larger assortment of flowers, herbs, and spices. Common fragrant flowers are roses, geraniums, orchids, and hibiscus. Here is our take on a classic.

INGREDIENTS:

  • 4 sprigs of fresh rosemary
  • 2 sprigs of sage
  • 1 tsp thyme
  • 1 tsp basil
  • 1 tsp whole peppercorns
  • 1 tsp cardamom
  • ½ cup cinnamon sticks, broken into pieces
  • ½ cup allspice
  • ¼ cup whole cloves
  • 1-2 cups rose petals
  • Lemon peel from 1-2 lemons
  • ½ tsp vanilla extract
  • 10-15 drops essential oil, such as chamomile or lavender
  • ¼ cup water, in a spray bottle
  • 1 handful Decorative Pearls (optional)
  • Fabric, cut into a circle that is twice the diameter of jar
  • Ribbon

INSTRUCTIONS:

  1. Combine all ingredients except vanilla, essential oil, and water in large baking pan.
  2. Dry in oven for at least two hours, until flowers and herbs are brittle, and peel is dry.
  3. Add vanilla and essential oil to water in spray bottle and lightly spritz dried ingredients.
  4. Transfer mixture to Apothecary Jar or other glass vase of your choice.
  5. Add Decorative Pearls, if desired.
  6. Cover jar lid or open vase with fabric and secure in place with Ribbon.
  7. TIP: Cutting the fabric with pinking shears adds a nice touch.

Potpourri can be used dry, in a variety of different types of decorative bowls or glass vases. We especially recommend Bowl VasesCube Vases, and Pan Vases for use with potpourri. And our Apothecary Jars are perfect for giving potpourri as a gift.

When your potpourri begins to lose its fragrance, you can add a handful to a few cups of water and simmer on the stove in a saucepan. You’ll get a little bit more enjoyment from the aroma, and your house will smell amazing!
